\"\"<\/a>It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus and McAnulty Distinguished Professor of History Dr. Steven B\u00e9la V\u00e1rdy.\u00a0 Dr. V\u00e1rdy received his doctoral degree from Indiana University and taught at Duquesne University for fifty years \u2013 from 1964 to 2014.\u00a0 As one of Duquesne\u2019s most prolific faculty members, Dr. V\u00e1rdy wrote and edited more than 22 books, 175 scholarly articles, 87 book reviews, 83 encyclopedia entries, 60 essays, and 350 newspaper articles.\u00a0 He was considered one of the world\u2019s leading experts in Hungarian history and presented more than 100 conference papers in Europe and the United States.\u00a0 He received numerous awards for his scholarly achievements, including Hungary\u2019s Berzsenyi Prize, Hungary\u2019s Officers\u2019 Cross of the Order of Merit, \u00c1rp\u00e1d Academy\u2019s Gold Medal, Canada\u2019s Pro Libertate Diploma and Pro Patria in Exteris Diploma, along with Duquesne University\u2019s Excellence in Scholarship Award.\u00a0 Dr. V\u00e1rdy was elected to the Hungarian Writer\u2019s Federation and the Hungarian Academy of Science; he received two honorary doctorates from Hungarian universities and had two festschrifts written in his honor by some of his former students.\u00a0 Dr. V\u00e1rdy served on a number of editorial boards and held administrative positions on numerous external academic associations and committees \u2013 some of which he founded.<\/p>\n

Dr. V\u00e1rdy is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dr. Agnes Husz\u00e1r V\u00e1rdy \u2013 who co-wrote and co-edited some of his scholarly work \u2013 as well as his three children Nicholas, Zolt\u00e1n, and Laura, and four grandchildren.\u00a0 In 2015, Drs. Agnes and Steven V\u00e1rdy endowed the V\u00e1rdy International Research and Study Grant at Duquesne University to support overseas research by graduate history students or study abroad by undergraduate history majors. Dr. V\u00e1rdy passed away in his native Hungary and further information pertaining to any services or gifts will be forthcoming.<\/p>\n
