The number of poor declined to an\u00a0all-time low in Hungary from 2012 to 2016<\/a>, a labour market expert told public news channel M1 on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the period under survey, Hungary witnessed the biggest decline in this respect from among all European Union member states, Piroska Szalai said, citing data from Eurostat, the EU\u2019s statistics office.<\/p>\n

The number of severely materially deprived people fell from 2.2 million in 2004 to 1.7 million by 2007, but then rebounded to 2.7 million by 2012.<\/p>\n

In the subsequent four years, however,\u00a0it decreased by about half<\/a>, she said.<\/p>\n

Hungary\u2019s economy started to perceivably decline in 2006, two years before the outbreak of the global economic crisis, with shrinking employment, decreasing real wages and growing unemployment.
