The government\u2019s enhanced support for families will \u201cbenefit the whole nation, including young people\u201d in the long run, Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n told public Kossuth Radio on Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYoung people often plan a family \u2026 and then face financial difficulties,\u201d Orb\u00e1n said, adding that he wanted to build a Hungary in which young people are not forced to change their plans due to money worries. Compared with other European Union members, Hungary has the highest family support in relation to GDP, the prime minister said, noting government efforts to reverse negative population trends.<\/p>\n

\u201cHungary\u2019s population is steadily decreasing,\u201d Orb\u00e1n said, adding that measures must be geared towards ensuring an adequate replacement rate. Enhanced family support will promote child birth and lower the average age, which will make Hungary a \u201cmerry and happy\u201d country, Orb\u00e1n said.<\/p>\n

Concerning the government\u2019s latest public consultation survey, Orb\u00e1n said that the economy was strong enough to allow for more assistance to families. On the subject of the European People\u2019s Party\u2019s congress in Helsinki, Orb\u00e1n said \u201cit had not been difficult\u201d to decide whom to support of the two candidates. He called Alexander Stubb an \u201cextremely liberal, pro-migration politician\u201d while he said Manfred Weber was a Christian Democrat.<\/p>\n

In his interview, Orb\u00e1n referred to the United Nations\u2019 migration pact, calling for it to be ditched because \u201cgovernments should side with the people and protect them from illegal migration, terrorism, crime, and economic difficulties\u201d. He insisted that the plan would \u201cgo against the will of the vast majority of Europeans\u201d. \u201cThis is a bad pact\u201d, Orb\u00e1n said, arguing the plan was aimed at driving international support for \u201cprinciples that are in conflict with the interests of Hungarian people\u201d such as acknowledging migration as a human right. \u201cWe won\u2019t accommodate migrants and cannot accept a document which presents it as a noble and globally shared purpose,\u201d Orb\u00e1n said.<\/p>\n

He said that experts in China converged on the view that central Europe will be the engine of growth in Europe in the next 5 to 10 years. Budapest, he added, is the centre of cooperation between 16 central and eastern European countries, the Balkans and China. Orb\u00e1n said Hungarian quality manufacture in China is competitive and his visit had resulted in a deal to resume exports of Hungarian poultry halted due to bird flu. Further, hundreds of millions of dollars of Hungarian business opportunities have opened up, too, he added.<\/p>\n

Asked about the Central European University (CEU), Orb\u00e1n said \u201chysteria\u201d had been generated around the \u201cSoros university\u201d for as long as the CEU had been present in the country. \u201cHowever much hysteria is whipped up around the university, I\u2019m not inclined to allow anyone to operate outside of the law.\u201d At the same time, the prime minister said the prospect of the CEU leaving Hungary was \u201ca bluff\u201d since Hungarian law provided for the possibility of the universities operations and \u201cthe legal requirements for their operation in Hungary are guaranteed.\u201d \u201cI\u2019d place a large bet that we\u2019ll still see them in Budapest,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He called Alexander Stubb an \u201cextremely liberal, pro-migration politician\u201d while he said Manfred Weber was a Christian Democrat. In his interview, Orb\u00e1n referred to the United Nations\u2019 migration pact, calling for it to be ditched because \u201cgovernments should side with the people and protect them from illegal migration, terrorism, crime, and economic difficulties\u201d. He insisted that the plan would \u201cgo against the will of the vast majority of Europeans\u201d. \u201cThis is a bad pact\u201d, Orb\u00e1n said, arguing the plan was aimed at driving international support for \u201cprinciples that are in conflict with the interests of Hungarian people\u201d such as acknowledging migration as a human right. \u201cWe won\u2019t accommodate migrants and cannot accept a document which presents it as a noble and globally shared purpose,\u201d Orb\u00e1n said. He said that experts in China converged on the view that central Europe will be the engine of growth in Europe in the next 5 to 10 years.
