The teams from \u00cdrdal\u00e1.hu and Gerilla.hu already have plans for the continuation of the Szekler\u2019s European Citizen\u2019s Initiative as they wait for Brussels\u2019 approval to continue the campaign. The team expects to concentrate on five countries which will hopefully bring the Szekler\u2019s initiative to fruition; the campaign has already begun preparations. While the workforce behind \u00cdrdal\u00e1.hu<\/a> and Gerilla.hu<\/a> take a short break after their months-long campaign, they\u2019ve already begun preparing for the future and examining what has been done so far.<\/p>\n

L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Pesty, Campaign Manager, told Magyar Nemzet: it has occurred to him that if the initiative were to fail it would be best to resign\u2014but he will stay on given the encouragement from the political sphere and financial support.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As we wrote<\/a>, though tens of thousands of signatures support the Szekler petition and two new countries managed to reach the threshold (Croatia and Lithuania) the petition is still not yet valid. The reason being is that a sufficient number of signatures from two more countries\u2014aside from Croatia, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia \u2013 are still needed to validate the initiative.<\/p>\n

L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Pesty explained that during the second round of the campaign\u2019s closing period which ended on November 7, the campaign focused on a handful of countries: Croatia, Slovenia, Spain, Lithuania, Belgium, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Ireland, Austria, Italy and Poland. \u201eItaly and Poland were the first countries to drop out from among our targets because, despite collaboration with large-scale social movements, labor unions and the former boxer Dariusz Michalczewski, these connections didn\u2019t achieve the mobilization we were hoping for\u201d described the campaign manager. He added that they intended to collaborate with a painter in Ireland with over 300,000 followers on social media, but in the end, it didn\u2019t work out.<\/p>\n

They expected to be able to arouse sympathy among the Irish given the situation in Northern Ireland, but it didn\u2019t bring the desired results.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to him, they worked closely with Austria\u2019s local Hungarian communities and organizations, but they weren\u2019t able to sufficiently mobilize this country either. \u201cIn the next round of cuts, Estonia and Latvia fell out. The intimidated Russian minority in Estonia didn\u2019t dare to work together with us; in Latvia however, the failure is somewhat inexplicable. One thing\u2019s for sure: when YouTube blocked our video campaign in the Baltics our fate was sealed. Regardless of our quick switch to the Russian VK platform within only three hours, it wasn\u2019t enough\u201d stated L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Pesty.<\/p>\n

In the final period our campaigning team focused on Croatia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Spain, Belgium, and Sweden\u2014finding success with the first two countries.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201eIn Sweden the local Hungarian diaspora and the Sami minority helped out the campaign, and both contributed a lot to the cause. We began working together with Swedish swimmer Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m \u2013 one-time Olympic, seven-time World, and ten-time European swimming champion \u2013 but in the end, we weren\u2019t able to bring our collaboration to fruition\u201d emphasized Pesty. He also elaborated on the Spanish situation: they cooperated with Basque and Catalan labor unions as well as with Carles Puigdemont\u2019s party, the European Democratic Party of Catalonia, yet it was a big drawback that they couldn\u2019t personally campaign with the hugely popular Catalan politician. The campaign manager believes this would\u2019ve been quite successful.<\/p>\n

L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Pesty said, in connection with the potential extension of the petition\u2019s deadline: we will focus on those five countries (Slovenia, Spain, Belgium, Sweden and Latvia) and there is nothing else to do than complete the work that we couldn\u2019t finish in the second round due to time constraints. He is sure that if Sarah Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m and Carles Puigdemon join the campaign, this will, in and of itself, get the last two countries and thereby bring success to the Szekler Petition.<\/p>\n

Though the signatures deadline ended on Saturday at midnight, information consistently suggests that the initiative may be continued. <\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They expect that Brussels will again postpone the deadline which will most likely be pushed back three months to February 7th; the next few months will be essential to obtain the remaining two countries so that the initiative reaches the lawful thresholds. This is also hinted at by the fact that the incoming signatures counter on the main website has not yet stopped \u2013 this is what happened on May 7th at the end of the first round. The Szekler petition can be supported at this very moment; many are taking advantage of this opportunity as signatures continue to accumulate.<\/p>\n

The stakes of the initiative lie in one of the European Union\u2019s largest funding structures, that cohesion policy should give priority to regions that are distinguished from the surrounding area by nationality, ethnicity, culture, religion, and language.<\/p>\n
