{"id":1064860,"date":"2021-03-03T19:14:03","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T00:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bocskairadio.org\/?p=1064860"},"modified":"2021-03-03T19:29:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T00:29:11","slug":"fidesz-leaves-the-epp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bocskairadio.org\/en\/fidesz-leaves-the-epp\/","title":{"rendered":"Fidesz leaves the EPP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>After a couple of year of wrestling match, it is finally done: After warning its partners, Hungarian Christian-Democrat Prime Minister Orb\u00e1n\u2019s Fidesz party decided to leave the European Popular Party (EPP), the centre-right wing group of the European Parliament.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>The epidemic acted as an accelerator<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhile hundreds of thousands of Europeans are hospitalized and our doctors are saving lives, it is utmost disappointing to see that the EPP Group is paralysed by its inner administrative issues and is trying to mute and disable our democratically elected MEPs,\u201d one can read in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KatalinNovakMP\/status\/1367053668458106881\/photo\/1\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s letter<\/a> to EPP Group President Manfred Weber.<\/p>\n<p>The amendments to the rules of the EPP Group are clearly a hostile move against Fidesz and our voters\u201d, wrote Viktor Orb\u00e1n, referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/visegradpost.com\/en\/2021\/03\/02\/the-epps-weapon-against-fidesz\/\">the EPP\u2019s leading figures\u2019 scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLimiting our MEPs\u2019 ability to carry out their duties as elected Members of the European Parliament deprives Hungarian voters from their democratic rights. This is antidemocratic, unjust and unacceptable. Therefore, the governing body of the Fidesz has decided to leave the EPP Group immediately\u201d, reads the letter of the Hungarian conservative Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur MEPs will continue to speak for whom they represent, our voters, and defend the best interest of the Hungarian people\u201d, concludes the letter.<\/p>\n<h3>A sensational exit not without consequences<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"fr\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">Over the years, the European People\u2019s Party has drifted towards the centre, then towards the progressive left, while Fidesz has known since 2010 an evolution from the centre to the Christian right. These developments did not mix well and the regular attacks against Hungary since the migrant crisis of 2015 as well as the strengthening of the Visegr\u00e1d group to the detriment of Berlin have been the source of numerous and recurring tensions between the more and more progressive MEPs of the EPP and those of Fidesz, aligned with the conservative line of Viktor Orb\u00e1n.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"fr\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/visegradpost.com\/en\/2019\/03\/22\/fidesz-vs-the-epp-the-saga-goes-on\/\">an interminable soap opera<\/a> which has been going on <a href=\"https:\/\/visegradpost.com\/en\/2019\/03\/11\/viktor-orban-evokes-a-possible-future-for-fidesz-outside-the-epp\/\">for two years already<\/a> between the EPP\u2019s progressive leadership and Fidesz, representative of the right wing of the EPP, the affair came to an end following the frontal opposition without concession from Fidesz to <a href=\"https:\/\/visegradpost.com\/en\/2021\/03\/02\/the-epps-weapon-against-fidesz\/\">the modifications of the EPP regulations<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"fr\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">If the <em>face-\u00e0-face<\/em> between Fidesz and the EPP has lasted for years, this departure from the group can have many consequences. First of all, it is a considerable weakening for the EPP, already in decline \u2013 hence the reluctance of the EPP to exclude Fidesz from its ranks \u2013 because Fidesz had so far brought 13 MEPs out of the 187 that the group currently counts \u2013 although still the largest group in the European Parliament (174 MEPs out of 705 after subtracting Fidesz MEPs).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VIiyi\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"JLqJ4b\" data-language-for-alternatives=\"en\" data-language-to-translate-into=\"fr\" data-phrase-index=\"0\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s choice whether or not to join another parliamentary group will not be without consequences. If Fidesz were, for example, to join the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) of which the Polish PiS is a member, this would give this group often described as Eurosceptic more MEPs than the Greens (currently 73) and as many (75) than the Identity and Democracy (ID) group \u2013 which includes the National Rally of Marine Le Pen.
