The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded<\/a> L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Lov\u00e1sz and Avi Wigderson the Abel Prize, the equivalent of the Nobel Prize within the field of mathematics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Lov\u00e1sz, former president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), professor emeritus at E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University (ELTE), and current research professor at Budapest\u2019s R\u00e9nyi Alfr\u00e9d Mathematical Research Institute, has contributed immensely to both the field of mathematics and the development of Hungary\u2019s education system.<\/p>\n

The other recipient for this year\u2019s Abel Prize, Avi Wigderson, is the Herbert H. Maass Professor in the school of mathematics at the institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Wigderson has also worked extensively in the field of mathematics and computer science.<\/p>\n

Math is not one of the disciplines which can be awarded<\/a> the Nobel Prize, therefore the Abel Prize is considered to hold a similar status.<\/p>\n

Grand Steps for Mathematics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The two mathematicians have been awarded<\/a> the prize \u201cfor their foundational contributions to theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, and their leading role in shaping them into central fields of modern mathematics,\u201d the academy announced.<\/p>\n

Both Lov\u00e1sz and Wigderson have focused their research on the theory of computational complexity.<\/p>\n

Hans Munthe-Kass, chair of the Abel committee, said<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Lov\u00e1sz and Wigderson have been leading forces in this development over the last decades. Thanks to their leadership discrete mathematics and the relatively young field of theoretical computer science are now established as central areas of modern mathematics.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A Pioneer in Computer Science Algorithms<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Born in Budapest in 1948, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Lov\u00e1sz has been a crucial actor in connecting<\/a> the disciplines of discrete mathematics and computer science. In addition to having authored many books and scientific publications, Lov\u00e1sz is an inspiring speaker who has played a crucial role in the advancement of education.<\/p>\n

Lov\u00e1sz is responsible for the revolutionary LLL algorithm, which has had multiple applications in areas such as number theory, cryptography, and mobile computing.<\/p>\n

Lov\u00e1sz has won awards such as the 1999 Wolf Prize, the 1999 Knuth Prize, the 2001 G\u00f6del Prize, and the 2010 Kyoto Prize.<\/p>\n

Developing Computer Technology Without a Computer<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In an interview with Telex, Lov\u00e1sz discussed<\/a> his work in discrete mathematics and computer science, the theory of computational complexity, his famous LLL algorithm, and the environment of his research in communist Hungary.<\/p>\n

When asked about the availability of computers in the 60s and 70s, Lov\u00e1sz said \u201cin the beginning there were non, but in the beginning we did not even need a machine, since we were strictly interested in the theoretical side of computer technology.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lov\u00e1sz acquired his first computer in 1986, an IBM XT, on which he would begin the experimentation of his various algorithms.<\/p>\n

Lov\u00e1sz told the news portal that there were some obstacles to the research of mathematics at the time, such as bureaucratic difficulties in accessing foreign sources. Ultimately, however, there was no such overbearing pressure that would have severely obstructed him in his work.<\/p>\n

Contributions to Hungarian Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Not only is Lov\u00e1sz known for his contributions to the field of computer science, but he has also been a crucial figure in the development of education in Hungary.<\/p>\n

Becoming the president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2014, Lov\u00e1sz said<\/a> \u201cI consider it my main task to maintain a high level of public trust in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his time at the academy, he initiated multidisciplinary research programs such as the Subject Pedagogical Research Program, the National Water Science Program, the Agricultural Research Program, and the public health program.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, his advocacy for women\u2019s involvement in math, physics, and other natural sciences resulted in a significant increase in the number of female academics in Hungary between 2017 and 2019.<\/p>\n

The work of people such as L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Lov\u00e1sz and Avi Wigderson has been essential in the development of computer science as we know it today.<\/p>\n
