The concept of liberal democracy has ceased to exist and has become \u201cliberal non-democracy\u201d, Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n said in an interview<\/a> to Slovak news portal postoj.sk late on Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the interview, the prime minister discussed issues such as the future of the European Union and central Europe, migration and Covid-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n

Asked about the \u201cbuilding of an illiberal country\u201d, Orb\u00e1n said that the concept of liberal democracy had ceased to exist and had been replaced by \u201cliberal non-democracy\u201d. This form of governance, he said, \u201cincludes liberalism, but doesn\u2019t include democracy\u201d. Liberals, he said, strived for a hegemony of opinion, which they aimed to achieve through the use of political correctness by \u201cstigmatising conservatives and Christian Democrats and sidelining them\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fighting liberals for freedom,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Orb\u00e1n said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhereas I\u2019m on the side of freedom, they\u2019re on the side of the hegemony of opinion.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Concerning his ruling Fidesz party\u2019s recent departure<\/a> from the European People\u2019s Party (EPP) and their future goals in European politics, Orb\u00e1n said Fidesz wanted to \u201cchange Brussels\u201d. In its current form, Brussels is not capable of addressing people\u2019s problems, he said. Orb\u00e1n said this had been proven by both the migration crisis and the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to change Brussels together with the EPP, but they weren\u2019t prepared to do it,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Orb\u00e1n said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we have to establish a new political community that can influence Brussels.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As regards the differences between Hungary and Germany\u2019s positions on migration, the prime minister said Germany believed that when native Germans who \u201care beginning to leave Christian values behind\u201d begin \u201cmixing with \u2026 Muslim migrants\u201d, they would create a new society. He said he disagreed with this view, arguing that migration would lead to the emergence of parallel societies and the problems that came with it. \u201cI don\u2019t wish this on my own country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Responding to a question in connection with EU institutions, Orb\u00e1n said \u201cthere are components in the European Union that would need to be strengthened\u201d, adding that the opposite was true as regards the European Parliament. The EP, he said, \u201cis playing a particularly harmful role to the extent that it uses parties as the basis of European politics\u201d, and, Orb\u00e1n added, the European left \u201cis using it [the EP] to attack the sovereignty of nation states\u201d.<\/p>\n

The question is not whether to say \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019 to the EU, but rather what kind of EU it is we want\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Asked about the EU\u2019s future, Orb\u00e1n said it was certain that no unified European people would be formed on the continent by 2030. \u201cThere will still be Hungarians, Slovaks, Germans and French living here, as there will also be nations and states that will be cooperating, the form of which they will certainly figure out,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it is, however, a question whether the post-Christian and post-national societies will be able to build a stable western Europe.\u201d On this note, the prime minister said he was \u201cmore firmly convinced about the future of central Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI strongly believe that our children will live much better than us,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we are going to live a great central European renaissance in terms of the economy, demography, security policy and culture.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the interview Orb\u00e1n also discussed the EU\u2019s policy towards Russia, calling it simple to the effect that it is defined around \u201csaying \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no’\u201d. \u201cBut we in this regard need to pursue a policy that is more subtle; one that understands that Russia is a very powerful state, a state that also respects power,\u201d Orb\u00e1n said.<\/p>\n

Asked about Hungary\u2019s policy on Covid-19 vaccines, Orb\u00e1n said it had been clear as early as last spring that demand for the jabs would exceed supply. Since Hungary has good relations with both Russia and China, the government had enquired ahead of time as to whether they would be able to supply vaccines to Hungary. The Russian and Chinese vaccines in use in Hungary today had to be approved by the Hungarian authorities, he noted. Orb\u00e1n added that Hungary is helping Slovakia with the assessment of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.<\/p>\n
